The happiness of Gravity.

I had studied Physics during my Pre-University years, and I had scored some marks also in the subject. But it was later, when I had left all my contacts with the subject physics, that I got enchanted with this discipline. People tend to keep away from physics, but physics as a philosophy is pure enchantment, and nothing but pure joy.

I understood the philosophy of the Principle of Gravitational force recently only. I had studied the Newtons theory of Gravitational force during the days in college., but I understood what gravity was recently only. Had a question been asked, whether a stone or a feather dropped from the same height, will hit the ground first, I would’ve answered, instantly that, the stone will be the first to hit the ground. I am sure most of the people will answer the same. Well, I too agree, if the stone and feather was thrown from top of a building near you., that stone will hit the ground first. But., but if you do the same experiment on the moon, the amazing result is that, both the stone and the feather will hit ground at the same time. Needless to say, the experiment was conducted by the first men on the moon, and the results confirmed to Newtons Gravitational theory, which predicted that both will land at the same time!!!!!

Wonder why??!! Lets try to analyse the thoughts of Sir Issac Newton. Lets not waste time discussing whether the apple fell on Newtons head or near him., but we know that it did give newton impetus to think about the principle behind the fall. The gravitational thoery, which Newton brought about, mostly was based on the moon and its movement around earth. Let us common people, look at it this way. Any object has got a field of attraction. This field gets weaker as the distance from the object increases. Now since every object attracts, using apple as our example, we say that Apple attracts Earth, as Earth attracts the Apple. But since the mass of Earth is much much greater than the apple, the attraction is fatal for apple which falls towards earth. Now lets imagine apple is in outerspace, beyond our atmosphere, still earth attracts it and apple also attracts earth.. but since the distance between both has increased, the attraction is weak. but given time, eventually, this attraction moves the lighter object towards the heavier object and the apple will eventually fall towards earth. So you may ask, will moon fall into earth eventually.. yes.. but dont worry, when it will happen, humans might have colonised other solar systems., ie it will take a long time for that to happen.

Now lets come back to the experiment of the stone and the feather.. Why does both fall together at the surface of the moon, when dropped from same height. you will say, that the stone has got more mass and hence it should reach the surface first and then the feather should reach the ground. Hmm.. here comes the shift in thinking. Defenitely the gravitational force applied on the stone is greater than the gravitational force on the feather. But… understand this, more force is required for the stone to move towards the ground at the same rate as the feather and hence both fall at the same rate. Didnt get the point.. Think about it. This is the wonder of physics.

Didnt get it yet… I will illustrate with an example. say you have got a 20 kilo stone on the ground, and a feather, both which you have to lift up simultaneously, You will have to apply heavy force on the stone, than on the feather to lift it up, where as you need apply only a little force to lift the feather up. Now think about the same with gravitational force.. the same principle applies there.. Even if the gravitational force is more on the stone, its required to move the stone at the same rate as which the feather is attracted. If you understand this.. you will be wonder at the marvel that is physics.

Issac Newton made this discovery, but we all need to discover it again, to understand the Wonder of the nature, the principle of Gravity.

Another swimming session

Sushil’s here for SAP Training., and the bonus’s that I’ve got a Car. We went for a swim. I tried butterfly stroke today and was partially successfull in that. I have a lot of work to do on my swimming. Has a long way to go before I get fit. The only thing I have noticed so far is that the more effort I put in to reduce my weight, the more the weight shows. Last friday’s “weigh-in” at office showed the scale at 82 kilos.. Hmm I have to drop a lot of kilos. The exhaustion I had from Swimming, was compensated by “Hot Vegetarian Supreme Pizza” and a big chunk of “Garlic Bread”.. Seems like the only way I can drop weight is by keeping wallet at home and using light weight clothes…

God., Poor god!!!

Recently I was going through some of the journals and blogs.. and found that the popularity of the god has further diminished after the “Earthquake” episode. Poor God!!, he needs a spin doctor, that too pretty soon.

I found myself smiling, whenever I went through the peoples blog, blaming God, and turning “non-believers”(as if they were beleivers in the first place). I felt empathy for “God”. Had he been a corporate boss, looking after the institution of “The Earth”, most angels would’ve lost job, and some suspended pending inquiry.. what a predicament!!

On one side, we have got Hindu fundamentalists, who want to create “Ram-Rajya”(sorry boss.., I would prefer “Krishna-rajya”), and who have given a ugly look to a wonderful religion(When did Hinduism became a religion?!! in the first place)., and on another side, we have got the “Jehad” group, who wants everything done as per their interpretation of Holy Quran, and on yet another side are the active missionaries, who spread “The Word of God”. They took literally what Jesus said “I am the way and no one goes to god, but by me”, and started prozelyting a poor jews philosophy(Jesus was a jew, by the way, wasnt he?!). Poor Jesus, had he been alive, this would’ve been much more painful than the cross!!

But after all this, the fundamental question remains.. What about god! Good question. People expect god to be a person sitting in some antiseptic corner of the world, and deciding peoples fate and natural accidents. Hmm. what an expectation..

I will rather keep this journal entry open ended!!

O’ Dear one.. Learn the language of eyes..

Free translation of a hindi song, sung by Shubha Mudgal.
(sorry, cant replicate the magic in english.)

O’ Dear one,
Learn the language of eyes,
Learn what these silences are telling you,
Learn, I am not going to open my mouth,
Learn the language of heart.

O’ Dear one,
Learn to listen,
The rustle of the wind,
What do they say to you,
Learn to read, what my lay hair,
writes on my forehead, swinging.,
Learn the language of silence,
it has got a tale to tell you,
Learn O’ Dear one.

Time,is like still water,
dont disturb this,
lest the depths will get stirred,
Listen what the shadows say,
in the town of shallow breaths,
What do I have to tell you further,
My eyes have told you everything.

O’ Dear one,
Learn the language of eyes,
Learn what these silences are telling you,
Learn, I am not going to open my mouth,
Learn the language of heart.

Zoomin is back!!

Beginning to realize that the livejournal is getting crowded. Being a bit of “Crowdophobiac”, I think, I should think twice before “blogging” anything. I will have to work on making the some of the old entries private too.. mm.. a bit confused now.

Today Zoomin (Zubin) & co are back. Came back from office a bit early, started cooking food for them, since they will be coming back tired after a long flight. Made Daal, went to airport to receive them.. pretty tired they were after a long flight. But nice the meet them again. Drove back home..(realizing how car has become an important part of life now!!).

While they were settling down, got back to cooking again, made dry potato sabzi and then made pulao rice.. Yummy.. and they did enjoy the dinner.. Zubin and Girish were telling their goof-ups and bloopers back home. Girish turning to say thanks to the BEST bus driver and Zubin saying thanks to the bank wathcman… just to name a few to begin. Well they were really tired and left them to sleep at around quarter to ten..

Another day gone by(e)..

Swimming as an exercise

Went for a swim today.. has got to get back to shape.. Breast stroke seems for me to be the easiest one for me and the backstroke the most difficult(since I cant do with arm strokes, only can paddle, during backstroke).

While I was learning swimming, the difficult one to do was the breast stroke, as I couldnt get the combination right at all.. I didnt want to do the breast stroke, the way most do.. keeping head above water. I wanted it synchronised, the way professionals do it.. Hence I concentrated on it.. I borrowed books from library regarding swimming and put my efforts in correcting my breast stroke, and now, I am not a fast swimmer, but have become an efficient swimmer. I can do breast stroke with less effort and I dont aim to be the fastest.

Later I realised that, breast stroke wasnt doing any good to me, except that I am spending time in water going up and down and moving back and forth.. I started looking for more physical activity to burn my calories.. and jumped to freestyle. It is tough now, but I am still learning to find the perfect technique for the freestyle.

It did take my breath out trying to do the free style the way I wanted. But I’m not going to give up, after picking it up successfully, has to work on my backstroke, which seems really primitive. Somehow, I have picked up floating on water, without moving hands or legs, only by breating on my back and can stay afloat for more than a couple of minutes. But, sure it dosent burn enough calories, which I need.

Now the swimming routine is back again, doing now on alterante days.. now has to go on Friday or Saturday again and put more effort.

ps: Zubin & co are coming in tomorrow.. got to receive them..

Frustration..

Got a bit upset today.. Well, nothing to do with me, but you do get upset, when you feel for others. Zakir told, he got a dressing down, even after doing a really wonderful job. We all know, that Zakir is putting in his best efforts and always does things before deadlline. Still, a dressing down..?!! Poorly managed, I would say. Even if he was to be said something, it could’ve been in a friendly way, just hinting, initially, then if still dosent have effect, becoming more specific, but still informal.

Zakir was upset, and I felt bad. Tried my best to bring his smile back, and got that smile also, but I could feel the sadness behind the mask.

In the afternoon, went for a walk with Ron and Rajesh.. had a nice walk, though it was a bit drizzling.. A walk always makes us fresh and then we can carry on furhter, without any tiredness. My walks have become less frequent, after I have bought the car.
